Les sons de base de Timbres-Durées étaient d'une part des percussions (tambour à corde, cymbale chinoise, tam-tam, wood-block, caisse claire frottée avec un balai, etc.) et d'autre part des jets d'eau dont l'auteur attendait beaucoup, et qui le déçurent rythmiquement. Cette déception racontée avec franchise par Messiaen, qui retira d'ailleurs de son catalogue ce qu'il appelait lui-même un «très modeste travail de rvthme », fut celle de beaucoup de musiciens d'écriture qui, comme Boulez ou Jean Barraqué, crurent trouver à l'époque dans la bande magnétique, découpable à merci, un moyen idéal pour réaliser leurs projets sériels. Or, le son fixé a ses lois, ses critères, qui se manient au niveau de l'oreille concrète, cette oreille différente de l'oreille musicale classique, et pour laquelle le haut-parleur n'est pas le simple équivalent d'un «monitor» ou d'un écran de télévision qui retransmet et diffuse, mais un écran de projection qui crée seul ou en orchestre, les lois de son propre espace. Cet espace, que nous appelons l'espace interne … est ici en effet partie intégrante de l'œuvre, les sons ne vivent pas indépendamment de lui. D'autre part, la façon dont dans cette musique les sons peuvent surgir à notre oreille derrière la membrane du haut-parleur est un effet spécifique que le compositeur de musique concrète doit prendre en compte. En clair, cette brève musique fait entendre un contrepoint, très lisible, entre une chaîne sonore de sons hétéroclites qui, collés les uns aux autres, forment une ligne brisée imprévisible et agitée, et, d'autre part, de brefs sons haletants, tombant à intervalles irréguliers, entre des silences également imprévisibles. Même s'il est impossible - comme pour toute œuvre sérielle - de suivre le jeu structurel qui a été la base de la partition, on est emporté par un mouvement spasmodique, sauvage, une espèce de swing irrationnel. Pour sa première utilisation systématique du magnétophone (les sons d'Orphée 51 étaient essentiellement des sons de tourne-disques repiqués sur bande), Pierre Henry a joué à fond de son principal apport : le montage. D'autant plus que la vitesse professionnelle de l'époque (76 cm par seconde), permettait, bien avant les « micro-échantillonnages» pratiqués sur l'ordinateur, de monter les sons en dessous même du seuil où l'oreille est à même de discerner deux phénomènes successifs. Mais ce qui rend Antiphonie très vivant, par opposition à d'autres études sérielles (comme Studie 1 de Stockhausen, faite à la même époque), c'est que son matériau sonore de base est très dynamique, il a une vie de son, il n'est pas un vague bruit impersonnel: et d'autre part. que ce jeu plutôt abstrait avec les durées est pulsé par l'utilisation du silence qui fait rebondir les sons, les magnétise et les charge, atomes éparpillés, d'une tension vivante. C'est une des premières œuvres où Pierre Henry manie systématiquement les rythmes irrationnels (d'une périodicité subtilement irrégulière), ce qu'il fera avec un art de plus en plus raffiné dans ses grandes «études rythmiques» des années 70. " Fasciné par l'étrange, Henry aime comparer la musique actuelle à de la science-fiction, une chose futurible, pour reprendre le mot de Boris Vian. Pour Intérieur extérieur, le compositeur n'a eu qu'à puiser dans une immense encyclopédie sonore - sa sonothèque - des sons enregistrés, traités, puis répertoriés selon un classement évaluant forme, densité et durée. Sollicité dans les années 70 par un groupe de rock, Spooky Tooth pour l'album Ceremony, Pierre Henry s'est arraché cette fois-ci les services de Violent Femmes pour Intérieur extérieur, qu'il remercie "de lui avoir prêté quelques sons". Çà et là, une parole (Premonition) et un accord de guitare (Étranglement, Étouffement) de Gordon Gano surgissent, la batterie métronomique de Guy Hoffman se contorsionne (Agitation), dynamisés par les manipulations multiples d'Henry, et secoués par une nature bruissante et rebelle, qui ruisselle, tonne au loin et explose sous la forme d'un orage. Dans Respiration, ce sont les miaulements d'un chat qui ponctuent l'air ; sourire en coin, le compositeur y dessine insidieusement le rythme d'une chanson - irrévérence suprême pour une musique contemporaine! Intérieur extérieur se clôt en beauté sur un Ciel fantasmagorique et quasi silencieux. Les bruits sauvages d'Intérieur ont disparu et lèvent le voile d'Extérieur sur un éden enchanteur, seul le cri d'un oiseau de nuit perce l'obscurité paisible. Dans un « théâtre quotidien de tensions et relâchements, d'éclats et brisures », le compositeur utilise comme matériel de base le piano, son instrument de prédilection, dont il obtient une variété d'effets : percussion, glissando, trille, trait, trémolo. « Cet ensemble d'élaborations servant de point de départ à des structures logiques, mais plus vastes, plus développées.
